Searching london to southampton usually returns train times for the Waterloo line, and for one person those are fine. This page is for the other cases: a family, a group, a pile of luggage, or a day that needs more than one stop. It covers the city itself; cruise passengers should go to our Southampton cruise port transfer page instead, which deals with terminals and embarkation times.
London to Southampton: train, coach or private driver?
Train. Direct trains run from London Waterloo to Southampton Central, and the Southampton Airport Parkway stop serves the airport. For one traveller this is the best value, especially with an advance ticket. National Rail has the current times and fares.
Coach. Coaches run from London Victoria. They are cheap but slower than the train, and you still need a connection to your final address.
Private driver. We collect you from your London address and drive 81 miles to Southampton, door to door, with no change at Waterloo and no luggage on a platform.

How far is Southampton from London by car?
The drive is 81 miles (130 km), about 1 h 50 min without traffic. Most journeys go out on the M3 and join the roads into the city, and the busy points are the approach to the M25 and the M3 at holiday weekends. National Highways publishes live conditions, and the route is on Google Maps.
Leaving before 07:30 or after 09:30 usually avoids the worst of the London end.
A day trip from London to Southampton
At under two hours each way, Southampton works as a day trip. We estimate eight hours of hire: 1 h 50 min each way plus four hours in the city. At our rates outside London that is £560 in an E-Class, £680 in an S-Class or a V-Class and £840 in a Range Rover, VAT included. The price covers the whole car, and the driver waits while you explore. Full rates are on our prices page.
A one-way transfer, an overnight stay or a different plan is quoted on request.
What to see in Southampton
The medieval walls and gates run through the old town, and Tudor House and Garden sits close by. The SeaCity Museum tells the story of the port and the Titanic, which sailed from Southampton in 1912. Ocean Village and the waterfront have cafes, and Mayflower Park recalls the ship that left for America in 1620. Check each attraction’s official site for opening times, and see Visit Southampton for events.
Make it more than one stop
Southampton is a gateway to the south coast. The New Forest is a short drive away, Winchester is on the way back to London, and Portsmouth is along the coast. For the island, see our Isle of Wight page. More ideas are in our guide to the best day trips from London by car.

Which car for Southampton?
The E-Class or BMW 5 Series takes up to three passengers. The S-Class or BMW 7 Series also takes three with more rear space. The V-Class or VW Transporter carries up to eight, and a Range Rover up to four. A Mercedes Sprinter minibus takes up to 16 and is quoted on request. See our minibus and coach hire page.
Getting around Southampton with your driver
The city centre is compact, but several of the places people visit are spread out: the old walls and Tudor House in the old town, the waterfront and Ocean Village on the water, and the university and hospital to the north. A driver who stays with you for the day removes the parking problem and lets you move between them in minutes.
Tell us where you want to be set down and when you want to leave. If you are visiting the SeaCity Museum or Tudor House, check the opening times on their official sites before you plan the day, because some close on certain weekdays or at certain times of year.
Eating and stopping on the way
There is no need to rush lunch. We can stop at a pub or village on the way, or in Winchester, which sits on the road back to London and makes a gentler break than a service area. Winchester has its own cathedral and a good selection of places to eat; see our Winchester page if you would like to turn the stop into a visit.
Avoiding the weekend crush
Friday evenings, summer Saturdays and bank holidays bring heavy traffic on the M3 and around the port. If your date is flexible, a weekday is calmer. If it is not, an early start keeps the day intact, and we will tell you if we think the return needs a later or earlier time to avoid a queue.
Southampton airport, the port and the station
Southampton has several arrival points, and each is a different pick-up. For Southampton Central railway station, give us the train time and we agree where to meet. For Southampton Airport, tell us the flight time and number. If you are travelling to join a cruise, use our cruise port transfer page, which covers terminals and sailing times; this page is for journeys to the city itself.
