London to Oxford by car is a straightforward drive, mostly on the M40, and a private driver makes it easy. We collect you from your hotel, home or office in London, take you to the centre of Oxford, wait while you explore and bring you back. Below you will find the drive time, what to see in one day, the traffic rules to know and what a day trip costs.
How long it takes to drive from London to Oxford
Oxford is 60 miles (96 km) from Trafalgar Square, which is about 1 h 30 min without traffic. See the route on Google Maps. If you search “how long does it take from London to Oxford by car”, that is the free-flow figure. Rush hours and the M25 can add a lot, so we usually suggest leaving London after the morning peak, or before it.
If you are starting from Heathrow, the drive is shorter than from central London, and we can plan it as a transfer: see our Heathrow transfer page.
Car, train or coach from London to Oxford
Oxford is one of the places where the train is a real competitor. The fast trains run from London Paddington and from Marylebone, and you can check times and tickets on National Rail. An advance ticket is usually much cheaper than a walk-up fare.
A private driver still makes sense when:
- You are two or more people and want to share one price.
- You have luggage, children or reduced mobility.
- You want to see Oxford and a second place, such as Bicester Village or the Cotswolds.
- You are going to an address outside the centre, such as a college event, hotel or business meeting.
If you want a wedding or event car, see our wedding car hire page.
Driving to Oxford: traffic, parking and charges
Many people ask whether it is a good idea to drive to Oxford from London. The road is easy, but the city centre is not. Parking in the middle is scarce, and the usual advice is to use a park and ride on the edge of the city. The county council publishes the current rules on traffic filters and the Zero Emission Zone at oxfordshire.gov.uk. There is no Congestion Charge in Oxford in the London sense.
With a chauffeur none of this is your problem. Our driver drops you close to where you want to be and waits nearby, so you do not need to find a space.
Is one day enough to visit Oxford?
One day is enough to see the highlights, and many visitors treat it as a day trip. Our estimate for this page assumes 4 hours in the city. A good plan for that time:
- Start with a walk through the old colleges. Check which are open on the University of Oxford visitor pages, since opening times vary.
- See the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library area.
- Have lunch in the covered market or a pub.
- Visit one museum, such as the Ashmolean, or walk along the river.
- Finish with a stroll along the High Street.
For a longer day, we can add a second stop on the way home. See our guide to the best day trips from London by car for more options.
What a private driver costs for Oxford
Hire outside London is charged by the hour, with a 4-hour minimum and VAT included. This page’s day-trip estimate is the round trip (1 h 30 min each way) plus 4 hours in Oxford, rounded up to the half hour: 7 hours in total. At the hourly rates that is £490 in an E-Class, £595 in an S-Class or V-Class and £735 in a Range Rover.
The E-Class and S-Class carry up to 3 passengers, the Range Rover up to 4 and the V-Class up to 8. A one-way transfer is also possible and is quoted on request. For the full rate table see our prices page.
Business and airport journeys to Oxford
Not every trip to Oxford is a day out. Many guests travel for meetings, conferences, college events or to reach a hotel, and a chauffeur suits these journeys well: you can work or rest in the back, arrive on time and leave your luggage in the car. A one-way transfer is quoted on request, and so are journeys that start or end at an airport. Use the form and tell us the address, the time you need to arrive and any waiting time.
For visitors arriving from abroad, we can collect you at the airport and take you straight to Oxford, so you skip the train into London and out again. The first hour of waiting on an airport pick-up is free of charge, which gives you time to clear arrivals and collect bags.
Making the day easier with children or older relatives
Oxford is compact but the old streets are cobbled in places, and a day of walking can be tiring. Because the driver waits nearby, you can return to the car for a rest, a change of shoes or a coat. A V-Class gives a family of up to eight room in one vehicle, and a Range Rover takes four with luggage. If anyone has reduced mobility, mention it in the form and we will plan the drop-off points to keep walking to a minimum.
Best time to visit Oxford
Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant. Summer is busy, with many tour groups in the centre, and the colleges can shut for exams or events. Term time brings more students and traffic, while the Christmas period has its own atmosphere and shorter days. Weekdays are quieter than weekends in any season.
Going on from Oxford
Oxford is an excellent first stop on a longer route. The Cotswolds start a short drive to the west, and many guests combine them in one longer day: see Cotswolds private tour from London. If you are heading to Stonehenge instead, take a look at London to Stonehenge.
