If you are planning a day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, the journey is the part you can make easy. A private driver collects you in central London, drives the 21 miles to Leavesden in about 45 min, waits while you tour, and brings you home. This page explains how it works and what it costs.
London to Harry Potter Studios: what you are going to
The attraction is called Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, “The Making of Harry Potter”. It sits at Leavesden, near Watford in Hertfordshire, on the site where the films were made. You walk through real sets, props and costumes. Many visitors call it Harry Potter World or the Harry Potter Studios, and the official name is the one you will see on tickets.
We are not connected to the studio. We drive you there, and that is all.
Tickets must be booked in advance
Entry is by pre-booked, timed ticket only. You buy it from the official Warner Bros. Studio Tour London website, and you choose a date and entry slot. Do this first, as popular dates sell out. Opening times and ticket prices change through the year, so check them on the official site rather than relying on a third party.
Once you have your slot, send us the date and entry time and we will work back from it to plan your pick-up.
London to Harry Potter Studios by car
The drive from central London is 21 miles (34 km), about 45 min without traffic. You leave London on the north-west side and join the motorway for the final stretch. Traffic around Watford can add time, particularly at the start and end of the school day, so we plan the departure with a margin.
The route is on Google Maps if you want to see it.
London to Harry Potter Studios by train and bus
If you are travelling alone, the train works well. Trains run from London Euston to Watford Junction, and a shuttle bus runs from the station to the studio. You can check the train times and ticket types on National Rail, and confirm the shuttle details on the studio’s own site.
The catch is the number of steps: a tube to Euston, a train, a shuttle bus and the same again at the end of a long day with tired children. For a family of four or a group of eight, a private car often comes out as good value, and it removes the queue for the shuttle.
| Private driver | Train + shuttle | |
|---|---|---|
| Door to door | Yes | No |
| Changes | None | Tube, train, shuttle |
| Good with pushchairs and tired children | Yes | Harder |
| Own timetable | Yes | No |
How long to allow
Most visitors spend about four hours inside the tour, and some stay longer if they enjoy the shops and cafe. Our day-trip estimate allows four hours on site, which is a sensible planning figure. If your ticket slot is early in the day, we will plan a pick-up that leaves a margin for traffic.
The driver stays with you for the whole day. You do not need to arrange a return time with a booking office: when you come out, you tell the driver and you go.
What the transfer costs
The day-trip estimate in the box above is built like this: 45 min each way plus four hours on site, rounded up to the half hour, gives 5.5 hours at our hourly rate outside London. That is £385 in an E-Class, £468 in an S-Class or a V-Class, and £578 in a Range Rover, VAT included. We agree a fixed price before you book.
Choose the car by party size:
- E-Class or BMW 5 Series: up to 3 passengers.
- S-Class or BMW 7 Series: up to 3 passengers, more space.
- V-Class or VW Transporter: up to 8 passengers, the usual choice for a family trip.
- Range Rover: up to 4 passengers.
For a school group or a large family party, ask about a Sprinter minibus on our coach hire page: it takes up to 16 and is quoted on request. The full list of hourly rates is on our prices page.
Airport and hotel pick-ups
Many visitors fly into London and do the studio tour on the same trip. We can collect you from your hotel, or from Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton. Luton is the nearest of the big airports to Leavesden, so see our Luton airport transfer page if you land there. For the others, there are pages for Heathrow and Gatwick. Airport transfers to and from the studios are quoted on request.
Make a day of it
The studio tour takes most of a day. If you want to see more of England on another day, read our guide to the best day trips from London by car, or look at Windsor and Oxford.
Best time to go and who it suits
The tour suits fans of all ages, but younger children usually enjoy it most if they have seen at least some of the films, and the whole visit is a lot of walking. Weekday slots outside school holidays tend to be calmer than weekends and the summer holiday. Pick the earliest slot your party can manage, and you will have a more relaxed day and an easier drive home.
With a driver you can also plan around nap times and meals. Ask us to leave a little later if you have small children, and keep jackets, pushchairs and shopping from the gift shop in the car instead of carrying them back to the station.
Why a private car works for families
A family day out at Leavesden usually means coats, bags, a pushchair and a bag of souvenirs. In a V-Class there is room for all of it, and the driver is there at the end to take you straight home. If your party is larger than eight, we can quote two cars or a minibus so everyone arrives together.
