Getting from London to Southampton cruise port with cases for a week or two at sea is a different job from a normal day out. The terminal is 81 miles away, boarding has a time window, and you do not want a station change with heavy bags. We provide a private driver from London or either major airport, with a fixed price agreed before you book.
How far is London from the Southampton cruise port?
From Trafalgar Square to the cruise terminals at Ocean Terminal it is 81 miles (130 km), about 1 hour 50 minutes without traffic. The route runs out of London onto the M3 and the M27. The M25 and the M3 are the usual trouble spots, especially on Friday afternoons and at weekends in summer, so your driver plans in a margin.
From the airports the figures are:
- Heathrow to Southampton cruise terminals: 67 miles (108 km), about 1 hour 20 minutes without traffic.
- Gatwick to Southampton cruise terminals: 81 miles (130 km), about 1 hour 45 minutes without traffic.
You can see the central London route in Google Maps.
London to Southampton cruise port: car, train or coach
Trains from London to Southampton Central are a reasonable choice for one person, and you can check times and fares on National Rail. The weakness is the last stretch: the station is not at the ship, so you still need a taxi or shuttle with your luggage. Coaches and cruise-line transfers are another option, with fixed departure times.
A private car is the easiest for:
- Families and groups, because the cost is shared across the car.
- Passengers with large or many cases.
- Anyone who wants to leave at a time of their own choosing.
- Travellers connecting from a flight into Heathrow or Gatwick.
Which terminal do you need?
Southampton has several cruise terminals, and your cruise line assigns one of them. The name and your boarding window are on your cruise documents. Give us the terminal when you book. The Port of Southampton website has directions for each. Because the port can change which terminal a ship uses, confirm it with your cruise line shortly before you travel.
Heathrow and Gatwick to Southampton
Many passengers fly in the day before sailing, or on the morning of departure. We collect you at the terminal and drive straight to the port. The first hour of waiting on airport pick-ups is free, so a normal wait for baggage reclaim is covered. See our pages for Heathrow and Gatwick.
If you fly in the same day as your ship sails, leave a generous gap between landing and boarding time. We can plan the pick-up, but we cannot promise the traffic.
Stopping on the way: Stonehenge and beyond
A few passengers like to make the drive part of the holiday. Stonehenge sits off the route and is a popular stop on a way to the coast. It is managed by English Heritage and needs timed tickets booked ahead, so check the current arrangements on the English Heritage website. Read more on our Stonehenge private driver page. A stop adds time, so tell us when you book and we will plan the departure from London accordingly.
Cars and luggage
Cruise luggage is bulky, so pick the car by the bags. Our fleet:
- Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series, up to 3 passengers
- Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series, up to 3 passengers
- Mercedes V-Class or VW Transporter, up to 8 passengers
- Range Rover, up to 4 passengers
- Mercedes Sprinter minibus, up to 16 passengers, quoted on request
For a party of four with large cases, the V-Class is usually the better fit than a saloon. For bigger groups, such as a family reunion cruise, see minibus and coach hire.
Embarkation day: timing the drive
Cruise lines usually give each passenger a boarding window, and arriving too early can mean waiting, while arriving too late can mean problems. Your cruise documents state the times, so read them closely. We work back from the boarding window, add the drive time and a traffic margin, and give you a pick-up time in London.
As a rough guide, the drive from central London takes about 1 hour 50 minutes without traffic, so a mid-morning pick-up is common for an afternoon boarding. We confirm the time with you rather than guess, because the right time depends on your terminal, your ship and the day of the week.
Disembarkation: the journey home
At the end of the cruise, you disembark at a time set by the ship, often early in the morning. Passengers sometimes wait for their luggage and clear port formalities before they can meet a driver. Give us your estimated time, and we will keep it flexible. We can take you back to London, to Heathrow or Gatwick, or onward to another part of the country, quoted on request.
Pre-cruise nights in London
Many passengers spend a night or two in London before sailing. We can take you from the airport to your hotel, run a sightseeing day by the hour, with a 4-hour minimum, through our chauffeur service, and then drive you to Southampton on the day. Ask for it as one plan and we will quote it together.
Large luggage and mobility needs
Cruise passengers travel with large cases, formal wear and sometimes mobility aids. Tell us what you are bringing so we can recommend a car with enough room. If you need help with access, say so in the form and we will talk through what we can do before you book.
Cost of a transfer to Southampton
Southampton cruise transfers are quoted on request, so there is no figure on this page. You receive one fixed price before you book, VAT included. The price depends on your pick-up point, the day and time, and the number of people and bags. See the prices page for how we price other trips. For a return at the end of the cruise, ask us to quote both legs together.
