Searches for how to get to Wimbledon tennis usually come down to one question: which station, and how far is the walk? This page answers that using the Championships’ own advice, and explains when a chauffeur is the easier option.
The Championships: what and when
The Championships, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam still played on grass. It is held at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in south-west London. The Championships 2027 run from Monday 28 June to Sunday 11 July 2027, according to the club’s official dates page, with the finals on the last weekend. Book your car as soon as you have tickets: the middle Saturday and finals weekend are the busiest days on the roads around the club.
Spectators do not have a dress code, but the club sets conditions of entry on what you can bring, such as bag sizes and banners. Read the conditions of entry before you go.
How to get to Wimbledon tennis by train and Tube
Wimbledon’s official getting to Wimbledon page lists train stations, walking, shuttle services, park and ride and taxi drop-off points. Three stations matter:
- Wimbledon has National Rail, the District line and Tramlink. It is the busiest, with the longest walk, and the Championships have run a shuttle service from it in past years, so check this year’s arrangement on the official page.
- Southfields is on the District line and is the closest Tube station for many people.
- Wimbledon Park is also on the District line.
South Western Railway runs direct trains from London Waterloo to Wimbledon, and National Rail has the current timetable. For the Tube, use the TfL journey planner on the day, as engineering works are common at weekends.
Expect queues on the walk from the stations in the middle of the fortnight. That is the main reason people choose a car.
Walking, shuttle and park and ride
The official page also lists walking routes, shuttle services and park and ride, which change from year to year. We do not repeat the details here because they are updated for each Championships. Read the official page the week before you travel, and note the last shuttle times if you plan to stay for the evening matches.
Which way suits which visitor
A single fan with a ground pass who is happy to queue is well served by the Tube and a walk. A family with children, a group of four or more, someone with limited mobility or anyone in smart clothes for a corporate day usually finds a car easier. The queues at the station are the main thing you buy your way out of, not the journey itself.
How to get to Wimbledon tennis by car
Driving yourself is hard: the roads near the club are residential and busy, and parking is controlled. The club offers park and ride, which is the way it steers drivers, and the details are on the official travel page. Prices and booking rules change, so we do not quote them here.
Drivers should also check the TfL page on road closures and traffic on the day, because event traffic around SW19 builds from the morning. A driver who does not have to find parking and who knows the approach roads saves a lot of the uncertainty, which is the main benefit of hourly hire.
A chauffeur to Wimbledon: how the day works
With hourly hire, the chauffeur collects you from your home, hotel or office. Wimbledon publishes taxi drop-off points on its travel page, and we use the ones that apply to your ticket and tell you where to meet the car afterwards. The driver waits through the day, and you decide when to leave. If you want to go for dinner in Wimbledon Village or back into central London, the car is ready.
The honest limit: roads around the club are closed or restricted during the Championships, and the evening exit from the area is slow. A chauffeur does not cure that, but it removes the station queues and the walk with bags in hot weather.
If you have a full day planned, tell us the time you want to be on your court or at your seat. The chauffeur does not need to know the match, only when you would like to be collected. We can also add a stop on the way, such as lunch in Wimbledon Village or a hotel drop-off, and include it in the same booking.
What a Wimbledon chauffeur costs
Wimbledon is inside London, so the London hourly rate applies: £60 an hour in an E-Class, £75 in an S-Class or V-Class and £95 in a Range Rover, VAT included, with a 4-hour minimum.
For a day at the tennis, we estimate 8 hours (30 minutes each way plus seven hours at the club): £480 in an E-Class, £600 in an S-Class or V-Class and £760 in a Range Rover. The figure is for the whole car, not per person, and is agreed before you book. The V-Class takes up to 8 people, so a group sharing it can make this a sensible option. See the prices page for the table.
Which car, and coming from Heathrow
The E-Class or BMW 5 Series and the S-Class or BMW 7 Series take up to 3 passengers. The Range Rover takes up to 4, and its higher seat is easier after a long day on your feet. The V-Class or VW Transporter takes up to 8, which suits a corporate party or a family with grandparents in tow. A Mercedes Sprinter minibus carries up to 16 and is quoted on request.
Wimbledon is 18 miles from Heathrow, about 40 minutes without traffic. If you are flying in for the tennis, we can pick you up and take you to your hotel or straight to the club. See our Heathrow airport transfer page; the first hour of airport waiting is free.
The same service works for the rest of the English summer. See our pages for the Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Ascot, or read about our general chauffeur service in London.
