If you are searching “london to stratford upon avon”, you are probably weighing train times against driving and wondering if one day is realistic. It is, and here is how the options compare.
London to Stratford-upon-Avon: train, coach or car?
By train. Chiltern Railways runs services from London Marylebone to Stratford-upon-Avon. A small number are direct and others need a change, so check the timetable on National Rail before you commit. Advance tickets are usually much cheaper than walk-up fares. The station is within walking distance of the town centre.
By coach. Long-distance coaches serve Stratford from London Victoria, normally with a change or a longer journey time. They are the lowest-priced option if your budget is the priority.
By car. Stratford-upon-Avon is 101 miles from central London, about 2 hours 10 minutes without traffic, mostly on the M40. Allow longer on Friday afternoons and at bank holiday weekends.
For a solo traveller the train is the sensible choice. For a family or a group of friends, a private driver removes the changes, the timetable and the walk to the station.
Why a private driver to Stratford-upon-Avon
- No connections. We collect you from your London address and drive you to the centre of Stratford.
- A stop on the way. The route passes close to Oxford and the northern edge of the Cotswolds. Tell us if you want to stop for a coffee or a village walk.
- A car sized to your group. An E-Class or S-Class takes up to 3, a Range Rover up to 4, and a V-Class up to 8. For larger parties we quote a Sprinter minibus for up to 16: see minibus and coach hire.
- Evening flexibility. Staying for a play? Our driver can wait and bring you back to London afterwards, which a train timetable may not allow. Hourly hire has a 4-hour minimum, and the hours simply run on.
What a day in Stratford-upon-Avon costs by car
Outside the M25 we charge by the hour, VAT included, with a 4-hour minimum. A typical day is 2 h 10 min each way plus around four hours in town, which comes to 8.5 hours. That is £595 in an E-Class, £723 in an S-Class or V-Class, and £893 in a Range Rover.
The price is fixed before you book, and your driver waits with the car while you visit. See the full price table for every vehicle.
Top things to do in Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford is the birthplace of William Shakespeare, and most of what visitors come for is within a short walk.
Shakespeare’s Birthplace and the town
The half-timbered house on Henley Street is where Shakespeare was born. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust looks after it and several other properties linked to his family, including Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Nash’s House & New Place. Check opening times and ticket options on the official Shakespeare Birthplace Trust website before you go.
Holy Trinity Church and the river
Holy Trinity Church, beside the River Avon, is where Shakespeare is buried. The riverside path, the gardens and the boats on the Avon make for an easy walk between the main sights.
Royal Shakespeare Company
If you want to see a performance, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s theatres are on the riverbank. Check the programme and book ahead on the RSC website. Matinee days fit well with a driver, since you know the car will be waiting.
Add the Cotswolds
Stratford is on the edge of the Cotswolds, and a stop in a village on the way back is easy to add. Our Cotswolds private driver page has ideas, and Oxford is also nearby.
London to Stratford-upon-Avon distance and route
The road distance is 101 miles from central London. The usual route leaves London on the A40 and joins the M40, passing High Wycombe and the Oxford area before turning north-west towards Warwickshire. It is a straightforward drive, and the M40 is one of the better motorways out of London, although the first stretch can be slow at peak times.
Because the drive is just over two hours each way, this is a long day. A start around 8.30 am gives a late-morning arrival, an afternoon in town and a return to London for the evening. We will agree the timings with you when we quote.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is realistic by car, but Stratford rewards a longer stay if you plan to see a play. If you stay overnight, we can take you out and collect you later, or arrange the return when you are ready. One-way and return-only journeys are quoted on request.
Visitors from overseas often add Warwick Castle or a Cotswolds village to the same trip. Both are nearby, and a driver who is already waiting for you makes that easy. For more routes like this, see our best day trips from London by car.
How much time do you need?
Four hours is enough for the Birthplace, lunch and a river walk. If you want the Anne Hathaway cottage or a play as well, a longer day or an overnight stay works better. Because we price the day by the hour, you can choose the length that fits and see the cost before you confirm.
