“London to seven sisters” can mean two different places. Seven Sisters is a station on the Victoria line in north London, but most people searching this are heading for the white chalk cliffs on the Sussex coast, and that is what this page covers.
London to the Seven Sisters cliffs: train, coach or car?
By train. There is no station at the cliffs. The usual routes are to Seaford or Eastbourne, then a local bus or a walk to the cliffs and Seven Sisters Country Park. That makes it an achievable day out, but it needs planning around bus timetables. Check train times on National Rail and travel advice on the Seven Sisters Country Park website.
By coach. Coaches to Brighton or Eastbourne are the lowest-priced option, but you still need a bus onward.
By car. Birling Gap is 73 miles from central London, about 2 hours without traffic. The roads are busier on sunny weekends, particularly on the way back in the late afternoon.
The cliffs reward an early start and a late finish, and that is where the public transport options are weakest. A private car removes the connections.
Why book a private driver to the Seven Sisters
- Direct to the cliffs. We drive you to Birling Gap or the Country Park without bus changes.
- Walk one way, be collected the other. Walk the cliff top and ask the driver to meet you at the far end. That is hard to do with public transport.
- Add Brighton, Eastbourne or a village. Because the day is yours, a lunch stop or an afternoon in Brighton can be built in.
- A car sized to your group. An E-Class or S-Class takes up to 3, a Range Rover up to 4, and a V-Class up to 8. For larger parties we quote a Sprinter minibus for up to 16.
What a Seven Sisters day costs by car
Outside the M25 we charge by the hour with a 4-hour minimum, VAT included. A typical day is 2 hours each way plus about three hours on the coast, which comes to 7 hours of hire. That is £490 in an E-Class, £595 in an S-Class or V-Class, and £735 in a Range Rover.
The price is fixed before you book. If you want to walk longer, the extra time is easy to price at the same hourly rate. See the price table for every vehicle.
What to see and do at the Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters are a row of chalk cliffs along the Sussex coast, part of the South Downs National Park, between Seaford and Eastbourne.
Birling Gap and the cliff top
Birling Gap is the usual place to stand and look along the line of cliffs. It is looked after by the National Trust, and you can find parking and visitor information on the National Trust page for Seven Sisters and Birling Gap. Chalk cliffs are unstable and erode, so stay well back from the edge and follow the signs.
Cuckmere Haven and the Country Park
Seven Sisters Country Park has the famous view of the river meandering to the sea at Cuckmere Haven. It is a good starting point for a walk of any length, from a short stroll to a long cliff-top hike toward Beachy Head.
Eastbourne and Beachy Head
If you want more, the coast road continues to Beachy Head and Eastbourne. Tell us before the day and we will include it in the plan.
London to Seven Sisters distance and route
The drive from central London to Birling Gap is 73 miles. The usual way is south on the M23 or A23 towards Brighton, then east along the A27 and onto the coast roads through Alfriston or Eastbourne. The last few miles are country lanes, which are quiet in winter but can queue on sunny summer weekends.
Parking at the cliffs fills up on good days, which is another practical reason to be dropped at the start of your walk. Your driver can then wait nearby or meet you at a different point along the coast.
Hiking the Seven Sisters from London
Walkers usually take the cliff path between Cuckmere Haven and Birling Gap, then continue towards Beachy Head if they have the energy. The up-and-down terrain adds up, so it is a proper walk rather than a stroll. A linear route needs a way back to the start, and a car that is waiting at the far end solves that. Check conditions and path closures on the Seven Sisters Country Park website before you go.
Bring water, food and appropriate footwear, as facilities along the path are limited. If you would rather just see the view and have lunch somewhere, that works too: the day is yours to design and we will price it by the hour.
Seven Sisters with Brighton or Eastbourne
Many people ask about a combined day with Brighton. With a private driver this is easy to organise: coast in the morning, Brighton in the afternoon, back to London in the evening. Longer days are charged at the same hourly rate outside London, and you will see the total before you confirm. For Brighton on its own, see our London to Brighton page.
Best time to visit
Late spring and summer have the longest daylight and the best chance of clear views. Autumn and winter are quieter, but the wind can be strong and the cliff paths can be muddy. Whatever the month, check the forecast and bring a windproof layer and sturdy shoes.
