Looking for the easiest way to get from London to Highclere Castle? A private driver takes you from your hotel or home to the front of the house in about 1 h 35 min, with no changes and no taxi queue at the other end. The castle stands in Hampshire, 68 miles from central London, and it is best known as the setting for Downton Abbey.
London to Highclere Castle: your options
There is no direct train from London to the castle. By train you go to Newbury and take a taxi for the last few miles; check times and changes on National Rail. For one person on a budget that is the cheapest way. An advance ticket is usually far cheaper than a walk-up fare.
For two or more people the picture changes. A car is door to door, you leave when you are ready, and you are not tied to a train timetable on the way home. Coach tours from London run to fixed itineraries and set departure times. A private driver is the opposite: your pick-up time, your stops, your pace.
| Private driver | Train + taxi | Coach tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door to door | Yes | No | No |
| Your own timetable | Yes | Partly | No |
| Stops on the way | Yes | No | No |
| Good for families and groups | Yes | Costs add up | Fixed seats |
London to Highclere Castle by car: the drive
The route from central London is about 68 miles (109 km). Without traffic the drive takes around 1 h 35 min. You head west out of London on the motorway towards Newbury before leaving it for the last stretch of country road into the estate.
Leave London before the morning rush and the journey stays close to that figure. On a Friday afternoon or a bank holiday weekend, tell us when you need to be back and we will plan the day around it. You can see the route on Google Maps.
Pick-up from Heathrow or central London
Most clients are collected from a London hotel, but the same trip works from Heathrow. If you land in the morning and want to go straight to the castle, tell us your terminal and we will quote the transfer. See our Heathrow airport transfer page for how airport pick-ups work.
Downton Abbey tour from London: what you are visiting
Highclere Castle is the country house of the Earl of Carnarvon, set in parkland designed by Capability Brown. The house is a Victorian creation by the architect Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament. It became famous worldwide as Downton Abbey, and you will recognise the main staircase, the library and the saloon from the series.
Highclere is not open every day. It opens on selected days and seasons, and entry is by ticket that you buy from the castle itself. Always check the dates and book on the official Highclere Castle website before you ask us for a quote, then tell us the date and your entry time. The driver will plan the departure around it.
How much time to allow
Allow around three hours at the castle: the house, the grounds and a pause for tea or lunch. Our day-trip estimate on this page uses three hours on site, plus the drive each way. If you want to see more of the estate, or you are visiting with children who will want to roam, add time and tell us in the form.
What a private day trip costs
The day-trip estimate in the box above is calculated from our hourly rate outside London: the drive each way (1 h 35 min x 2) plus three hours on site, rounded up to the half hour, which gives 6.5 hours. That is £455 in an E-Class, £553 in an S-Class or a V-Class, and £683 in a Range Rover, with VAT included. The price is fixed and agreed before you book.
The cars carry different numbers, so choose by party size:
- E-Class or BMW 5 Series for up to 3 passengers.
- S-Class or BMW 7 Series for up to 3 passengers who want more space and comfort.
- V-Class or VW Transporter for up to 8 passengers, which suits a family or a group of friends and brings the cost per person down.
- Range Rover for up to 4 passengers.
For larger parties, ask about our minibus and coach hire. A Sprinter takes up to 16 and is quoted on request. For all the hourly rates see the prices page.
Combine Highclere with another stop
Because the driver waits with you, you can add a stop on the way. If you want a longer itinerary, or a second day out, see our Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath trips, or browse the best day trips from London by car.
If you are travelling as a wedding party or a celebration, our wedding car hire service can be combined with a day out to a country house.
Best time to visit and what to bring
Highclere is at its prettiest in late spring and summer, when the gardens are in bloom, and again in autumn. Because opening days are limited, the date you can get a ticket for usually decides the day, so be flexible by a week or two if you can. Dress for a walk: the grounds are large and the paths can be damp after rain.
Tell us if anyone in your party needs step-free access or has a lot of luggage. We will pick the car to suit, and the driver can drop you as close to the entrance as the estate allows. Remember that tickets, entry times and rules on photography inside the house are set by the castle, so read the visitor information on its site before you go.
Why families and groups choose a car
A day out with children or grandparents is easier when nobody has to change trains or find a taxi. The V-Class seats up to eight, so one booking covers a whole family. You can stop for a break on the way, keep coats and bags in the car while you tour, and leave when the last person has had enough rather than when the timetable says so.
