A london to new forest day is a different kind of trip from a city visit: no ticket queue, no fixed route, just open heath, old woodland and a scattering of villages. That is also why it suits a car. This page sets out the drive, the train option, what to see and what a day costs.
London to the New Forest by car, train or coach
Train. Trains from London Waterloo run along the South Western Main Line to Brockenhurst, a village in the middle of the forest. For one person with a rucksack it is cheap and quick. From the station you walk, hire a bike or take a taxi, because the villages are spread out and buses are infrequent. Plan it on National Rail.
Coach. Long-distance coaches serve Southampton and Bournemouth, but they stop outside the forest, so you still need local transport.
Private driver. We collect you at your London address and drive the 89 miles to Lyndhurst in about 1 h 55 min without traffic. We can then take you to a pub, a viewpoint or a village that has no station at all, and you finish the day without changing transport.
How long is the drive from London to the New Forest?
Measured to Lyndhurst, the distance is 89 miles (144 km), about 1 h 55 min with free-flowing roads. The route leaves London, joins the M25 and then the M3 south-west before turning onto the M27 and the forest roads. Summer weekends and Friday evenings can add a lot of time on the M3 and around Southampton. You can preview the route on Google Maps.
Forest roads are slow by design. Ponies, cattle, donkeys and deer roam unfenced, so drivers keep to modest speeds, especially at dusk. The New Forest National Park Authority has visitor advice and maps.
What to do in the New Forest
The national park covers heath, wet woodland and some of the oldest open woodland in lowland England. A day usually works best with a base and two or three stops:
- Lyndhurst, the main village, with shops, the visitor centre and a good walking start.
- Burley, a village known for its ponies and its tea rooms.
- Beaulieu, with the National Motor Museum and the abbey ruins on the Beaulieu River.
- Brockenhurst, where the ponies often wander through the village.
- The coast at Lymington, if you want a harbour lunch.
Opening times and tickets for attractions change, so check each attraction’s own website before you plan the day. For a short list of ideas, see Go New Forest.
Best time to visit the New Forest
Late spring and early summer bring bright woodland and foals. August can be busy, so villages and car parks fill early. Autumn is a favourite: the beech and oak turn colour, and the pannage season, when pigs are turned out to eat acorns, is a distinctive sight. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, though the days are short and paths are muddy. A weekday is calmer than a weekend.
What a London to New Forest private driver costs
Our hourly rate outside London, beyond the M25, is £70 in an E-Class, £85 in an S-Class or V-Class and £105 in a Range Rover, with a four-hour minimum.
For a day trip, 1 h 55 min each way plus four hours in the forest comes to eight hours of hire. That is £560 in an E-Class, £680 in an S-Class or a V-Class and £840 in a Range Rover. VAT is included and the price is agreed before you book. It covers the whole car, however many of you are in it.
A one-way transfer to a hotel or a ferry, a longer day or an overnight stay is quoted on request. The full rates are on our prices page.
When a car makes sense
A car helps most when:
- you are three or more, so one car replaces several rail fares;
- you want to see more than one village, which a single station cannot offer;
- you have a child, a pushchair or someone who finds walking hard;
- your destination is a cottage or hotel away from the station;
- you want to stop at Winchester or Salisbury on the way.
If you are going alone and plan to walk from Brockenhurst, the train is cheaper, and we would rather say so.
Combine the forest with another stop
Winchester lies just off the M3 on the way down, and Salisbury is to the north-west. Southampton is the gateway for the Isle of Wight ferries and for cruises, and Bournemouth is the nearest big beach town. Add a stop in your enquiry and we tell you what fits in the hours.

A sample day in the New Forest
Leave London early and you can be walking by late morning. Start in Lyndhurst for coffee and a look at the village, then drive the forest lanes to Burley or Brockenhurst, where the ponies and cattle wander the streets and verges. A pub lunch with a garden suits the middle of the day, and there is time afterwards for a heath or woodland walk of an hour or two.
The driver can then take you to Beaulieu for the motor museum or down to Lymington for the harbour before heading back to London in the late afternoon. Do not feed or approach the ponies, which can bite and kick, and keep dogs on a lead where signs ask. If you are staying overnight, one-way transfers to a hotel in the forest are quoted on request.
