Searching for london to portsmouth mostly brings up train timetables, and for one person with a light bag that is sound advice. This page gives the honest comparison first, then explains where a private driver is the better way to make the trip: families, groups, cruise and ferry passengers, and anyone who would rather not change at a station.

London to Portsmouth: train, coach or private driver?

Train. Services run from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, which is right beside the Historic Dockyard and the harbour ferries, and other routes serve Portsmouth and Southsea station. For a solo traveller an advance ticket is hard to beat. See National Rail for times and fares on your date.

Coach. Coaches are usually the cheapest option and the slowest, and you finish at a coach station rather than your front door.

Private driver. We collect you at your London address and drive the 76 miles south-west, usually on the A3, which takes about 1 h 45 min without traffic. You choose when to leave and when to come home, and your bags stay in the car.

How long is the drive from London to Portsmouth?

The route is 76 miles (122 km) and takes about 1 h 45 min in free-flowing traffic. Most of it is the A3 out of south-west London, then the M25 and the road through Guildford and Hindhead. The Hindhead tunnel keeps the traffic moving on a road that used to be a famous bottleneck. Expect delays on Friday afternoons, in school holidays and on sunny weekends, when Southsea fills up. National Highways publishes live incidents, and you can preview the route on Google Maps.

Portsmouth as a day trip from London

Portsmouth works as a day trip because the attractions are compact. The Historic Dockyard, run by the National Museum of the Royal Navy, is the main draw, with HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior in one place. Allow a good half day, and check ticket details on the National Museum of the Royal Navy site. The Spinnaker Tower and the Gunwharf Quays shops sit on the waterfront next door, and a walk along Southsea seafront finishes the day.

Leave London by 08:00 and you can be on the dockyard waterfront by mid-morning. We plan the day with you when you ask for a quote, and the driver waits while you explore. Wider ideas are in our guide to day trips from London by car.

Ferry passengers and the island

Portsmouth is also a ferry town. Ferries leave the International Port for France, Spain and the Channel Islands, and the harbour terminals serve the Isle of Wight. If you are catching a sailing, tell us the check-in time and we work back from it. The port’s own site, Portsmouth International Port, explains arrival times. If your destination is the island itself, our London to Isle of Wight page covers the ferry crossing with the car.

What a London to Portsmouth private driver costs

Our hourly rate outside London, beyond the M25, is £70 an hour in an E-Class, £85 in an S-Class or V-Class and £105 in a Range Rover, with a four-hour minimum.

For the day trip, the 1 h 45 min drive each way plus four hours in Portsmouth comes to 7.5 hours of hire. That is £525 in an E-Class, £638 in an S-Class or a V-Class and £788 in a Range Rover. VAT is included and the price is agreed before you book. It covers the whole car, however many of you are in it.

A one-way transfer, a longer stay or a return on another day is quoted on request. The full rates are on our prices page.

When a car makes sense

A car is the better choice when:

  • there are four or more of you, so one fixed price replaces several tickets;
  • someone has limited mobility, or you are travelling with children and a pushchair;
  • you have heavy luggage for a ferry or a cruise, and the Tube to Waterloo does not appeal;
  • you want to stop on the way, for example at Chichester or the South Downs;
  • you start or end somewhere that is not near a station.

It is not the cheapest way for one person. If you are travelling alone and the date is flexible, buy an advance train ticket, and book us only if the journey itself becomes the problem.

Stops on the way and nearby

South of London the route passes near Guildford and the Surrey Hills. Beyond Portsmouth, Chichester and its cathedral are about a short drive along the coast, and Southampton is the other big port on this coast. If you are joining a ship there, see our Southampton cruise port transfer page.

What to see and do in Portsmouth

Beyond the dockyard, Portsmouth has more than most people expect. The D-Day Story in Southsea tells the story of the Normandy landings, which were planned and launched partly from this coast. Old Portsmouth has the cathedral, the harbour mouth at Spice Island and the Round Tower. Southsea Common and the seafront are good for an easy walk, with the pier and the beach close by. The city’s tourism site, Visit Portsmouth, lists what is on. Check opening times on each attraction’s website, as they change through the year.

Planning the day

A good order is the Historic Dockyard first, while you are fresh, then lunch at Gunwharf Quays or in Old Portsmouth, then the Spinnaker Tower or the seafront. Parking is awkward around the harbour, so the drop-off point matters. We set you down close to the dockyard gate and agree where to meet you later.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the train journey from London to Portsmouth?

Direct trains run from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, and there are other routes from Victoria and elsewhere. Journey times depend on the service and the day, so check the timetable on National Rail before you book.

How far is it from London to Portsmouth by car?

It is 76 miles (122 km) from central London, about 1 h 45 min without traffic. Allow longer on Friday evenings, summer weekends and when the A3 is busy.

Is Portsmouth worth visiting?

Yes, particularly if you like naval history. The Historic Dockyard has HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior, and the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays and Southsea seafront are close by.

Is it cheaper to drive or take a train from London to Portsmouth?

For one person, an advance train ticket is normally cheaper than any car. Once four or five people share one vehicle, and you add taxis at each end, the gap closes. A private driver also removes the station transfers.

Can you get a private driver from London to Portsmouth for the day?

Yes. With four hours in the city, a day trip is about 7.5 hours of hire. That is £525 in an E-Class, £638 in an S-Class or V-Class and £788 in a Range Rover, VAT included, for the whole car.

Can you take a taxi from London to Portsmouth?

You can, but a metered taxi over this distance is hard to price in advance. We agree a fixed price before you book, with VAT included, whatever the traffic does.
