If you are planning london to newbury, the likely reasons are the races, a visit to Highclere or a family weekend in West Berkshire. The train is quick and well suited to one traveller. This page covers the drive, compares the options honestly and shows when a private driver is worth it.

How long is the drive from London to Newbury?
The distance is 61 miles (98 km), about 1 h 25 min with free-flowing roads. The route leaves London on the M4, passes Reading and joins the A34 or the A4 for the last stretch. Roadworks and incidents on the M4 are common, and the A34 backs up when there is an accident. National Highways lists live incidents, and you can preview the route on Google Maps.
Newbury Racecourse by car
Newbury Racecourse is a major flat and jump racing venue just outside the town, and many people who search for London to Newbury are heading there. Fixture dates, ticket types, dress codes and car-parking arrangements are set by the course, so work from the official Newbury Racecourse site and check the day you want.
The main reason for a driver on a race day is the end of the day. The exit queues are slow, and a chauffeur who knows where to meet you makes the return easier. Whoever is driving does not have to stay sober, which matters when the day involves a few glasses. Tell us your racing day, entrance and finishing time, and we agree a meeting point before you book. For larger meetings in the same area, see our Royal Ascot chauffeur page.
What to do in Newbury beyond the races
Newbury is a historic market town on the Kennet and Avon Canal, with a mix of independent shops, pubs and a riverside walk. West Berkshire Museum tells the local story, and the canal towpath leads out into the countryside. The nearby North Wessex Downs are good for walking.
The biggest draw is Highclere Castle, the setting for Downton Abbey, a few miles south of the town. Opening days are limited and tickets sell out, so read the details on the castle’s own site before you plan. It is an easy half-day with a Newbury lunch, and we can combine them for you.

A one-way transfer, a longer day or an overnight stay is quoted on request. The full rates are on our prices page.
When a car makes sense
A car helps most when:
- you are going to the races and want to arrive and leave on your own time;
- you are three or more, so one car replaces several rail fares;
- you are carrying hampers, hats, luggage or a pushchair;
- you want to combine Newbury with Highclere or Winchester in one day;
- you prefer not to wait for connecting trains at Reading.
If you are going alone and the plan is simple, the train is cheaper, and we would rather say so.
Combine Newbury with another stop
Highclere Castle is the obvious companion, and Winchester with its cathedral is a short drive south. Going the other way, Marlow on the Thames is a gentler stop, and Blenheim Palace fills a longer day. Mention your plan in the enquiry and we tell you what fits.
Which car for Newbury?
- Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series: up to 3 passengers.
- Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series: up to 3 passengers.
- Mercedes V-Class or VW Transporter: up to 8 passengers, the usual choice for a family or racing party.
- Range Rover: up to 4 passengers.
- Mercedes Sprinter minibus: up to 16 passengers, quoted on request; see our minibus and coach hire page.
A sample day: races and Highclere
On a race day, leave London mid-morning so that you arrive well before the first race and have time to find your enclosure. Plan to meet the driver after the last race at a spot you agree beforehand, because the car parks empty slowly and the nearby roads fill. If you would rather spend the day at Highclere, an earlier start gives you the morning in the castle and the afternoon in Newbury for tea or a canal walk.
Whichever you choose, tell us your finishing time and a rough dinner plan, and we fit the return around it. Dress for the weather, as much of a race day is outdoors.
