For london to blenheim palace, visitors face a mismatch: the palace is one of the grandest houses in England, but it stands in a park outside Woodstock, beyond the reach of a train. This page covers the drive, the public transport options and the ways a private driver can make the day simpler.
London to Blenheim Palace: train, coach or private driver?
Train. The nearest practical stations are Oxford and Hanborough, followed by a bus or taxi. For one person on a budget, that works. Check the route and fares on National Rail, and plan the final leg in advance.
Coach and bus. Coaches reach Oxford from London, and local buses run from Oxford to Woodstock. Day-tour coaches from London also visit the palace, usually combined with other stops and on a fixed schedule.
Private driver. We collect you at your London address and drive the 67 miles in about 1 h 45 min without traffic. You arrive at the gate, the car waits, and you decide how long to stay.

How long is the drive from London to Blenheim Palace?
The distance is 67 miles (108 km), about 1 h 45 min with free-flowing roads. The route leaves London on the A40 and M40, then turns off for Oxford and follows the A44 to Woodstock. The Hanger Lane end of the A40 is the usual bottleneck, and the M40 backs up after accidents. National Highways lists live incidents, and you can preview the route on Google Maps.
What to see at Blenheim Palace
Blenheim was built in the early 18th century for the first Duke of Marlborough, as a reward for his victory at the Battle of Blenheim, and it is among the finest examples of English Baroque. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Winston Churchill was born here in 1874, and an exhibition tells his story.
The park was landscaped by Capability Brown, with a lake, a bridge and wide views. Beyond the house there are formal gardens, a walled garden and a miniature railway. Opening times, ticket types, garden-only passes and any special events are set by the palace, so check the official Blenheim Palace website for the date you want. We do not quote any ticket prices.
Combine Blenheim with Oxford or the Cotswolds
Three hours at the palace suits most visits, which leaves time for a second stop. Oxford is a short drive south, with its colleges and libraries. The northern Cotswolds begin just beyond Woodstock, and you can reach a village for lunch within half an hour. Bicester Village is also close, which suits a shopping stop on the way back.
Each extra stop adds hours, so tell us what you want and we say what fits in a day or whether an overnight stay is easier.
Best time to visit Blenheim Palace
Spring and early summer bring blossom and fresh green in the park, and late autumn colours are good too. Summer weekends and school holidays are busy, and events in the grounds can add traffic. Winter days are short but calm, and the palace is dressed up in its seasonal style. A weekday is quieter than a weekend, and an early arrival avoids the biggest crowds.

A one-way transfer, a longer day with Oxford or an overnight stay is quoted on request. The full rates are on our prices page.
When a car makes sense
A car helps most when:
- you are three or more, so one car replaces several fares and a bus;
- you want to combine the palace with Oxford or the Cotswolds;
- you have older relatives who would struggle with a bus and a long walk;
- you are carrying luggage for a stay in the area;
- you want to leave when the weather suits you.
If you are alone and happy with a bus from Oxford, public transport is cheaper, and we would rather say so.

A sample day at Blenheim
Leave London mid-morning to reach Woodstock before lunch. Start with the state rooms, walk through the formal gardens and take a turn around the lake in the park. Woodstock itself has pubs and tea rooms a short walk from the gate, and the high street has some pretty stone buildings.
If you have time after the palace, a drive to Oxford adds a college or a market, or a Cotswolds village such as Burford makes a gentler end to the day. The car waits during your visit, so there are no bus timetables to watch. Tell us the entrance you plan to use and we agree a meeting point for the return, because the park is large and the car parks are spread out.
