A trip from london to marlow is short by the standards of a day out, which is part of the appeal: a Thames town with a famous bridge, good restaurants and walks along the river, under an hour from the capital. The catch is that Marlow sits on a branch line, so public transport takes some planning.
London to Marlow: train, coach or private driver?
Train. There is no direct train from London. The usual route is a main-line train from Paddington towards Maidenhead and a change onto the Marlow branch, with one more change at Bourne End depending on the service. Check the current pattern on National Rail, because branch timetables are thin in the evening.
Coach and bus. Local buses link Marlow with High Wycombe and Maidenhead, but a coach from central London to the town is not a regular option.
Private driver. We collect you at your London address and drive the 35 miles in about 55 min without traffic. You are dropped at the riverside or your restaurant door, and the car waits or comes back for you when you are ready.
| Train and branch line | Private driver | |
|---|---|---|
| Door to door | No | Yes |
| Changes on the way | At least one | None |
| Late return | Limited services | Your choice |
| Bags and shopping | You carry them | Stay in the car |
| Cost for four people | Four fares | One fixed price |
How long is the drive from London to Marlow?
The distance is 35 miles (56 km), about 55 min with free-flowing roads. The route leaves London on the A40 and M40, then runs through the Chilterns on the A404. The Hanger Lane end of the A40 and the M40 around High Wycombe are busy at rush hour, and the A404 through Marlow Bottom slows on summer Sundays. You can preview the route on Google Maps, and National Highways lists live incidents.
What to do in Marlow
Marlow’s best-known landmark is the suspension bridge across the Thames, which leads to the church of All Saints and the weir upstream. Walk along the Thames Path in either direction for views of the water and the wooded hills on the Buckinghamshire side. The high street has independent shops, coffee shops and a good number of pubs and restaurants.
The Thames is the main attraction. In summer people picnic on the riverbank, hire boats and watch rowers on the stretch used by clubs. The local tourism site, Visit Buckinghamshire, has events and walking ideas. For Henley Regatta, a few miles upstream, see our Henley Royal Regatta chauffeur page.
Boat trips on the Thames operate in season, but they are a day out in themselves rather than a practical way of travelling from London.
Best time to visit Marlow
Spring and early summer are lovely along the river, with long evenings for a riverside dinner. Summer weekends are busy and parking in the town is tight. Autumn colours on the Chiltern slopes make a good walk, and in winter the pubs are cosy and the towpath is quiet, though the path can be muddy after rain. A weekday is calmer than a Saturday.
What a London to Marlow private driver costs
Our hourly rate outside London, beyond the M25, is £70 in an E-Class, £85 in an S-Class or V-Class and £105 in a Range Rover, with a four-hour minimum.
For a day trip, 55 min each way plus four hours in Marlow comes to six hours of hire. That is £420 in an E-Class, £510 in an S-Class or a V-Class and £630 in a Range Rover. VAT is included and the price is agreed before you book. It covers the whole car, however many of you are in it.
A one-way transfer to a hotel or a wedding venue, a longer day or an overnight stay is quoted on request. The full rates are on our prices page.
When a car makes sense
A car helps most when:
- you are going to a lunch or dinner and want to enjoy a drink without worrying about the return;
- you are three or more, so one car replaces several rail fares;
- you want to see Marlow and also Windsor, Henley or Oxford in one day;
- you are carrying luggage for a weekend stay on the river;
- the evening return would otherwise mean a missed connection.
If you are going alone and can manage the changes, the train is cheaper, and we would rather say so.
Combine Marlow with another stop
Windsor is a short drive east. Oxford lies to the north-west, and Newbury is a little further west. Tell us your plan when you enquire and we say what fits in the hours.

- Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series: up to 3 passengers.

A sample day: river, lunch and a walk
Leave London mid-morning and you reach Marlow in time for a walk along the river before lunch. Cross the suspension bridge, follow the towpath for a mile or two and return through the town. Book lunch in advance on a summer weekend, since the popular tables go early.
After lunch, the afternoon can be quiet, with a coffee by the weir, a stroll round the shops or a drive through the Chiltern lanes to a village pub. The car waits nearby, so you do not need to plan around train times. If your day ends with dinner, say so and we agree a later return. For a wedding or a party at a riverside venue, a one-way transfer is quoted on request.
