A search for london to bournemouth turns up train fares and coach timetables, and for one person those are a sensible way to go. This page compares the options honestly, then explains when a private driver is the better choice, especially for a family beach day or a group.
London to Bournemouth: train, coach or car?
Train. Direct trains run from London Waterloo to Bournemouth, and an advance ticket is much cheaper than a fare bought on the day. For one person with light luggage it is hard to beat. National Rail has current times and prices.
Coach. Coaches are the cheapest option and usually the slowest, as they share the road with everyone else.
Private driver. We collect you from your London address, drive the 106 miles and set you down at your hotel, the seafront or wherever you are going. A beach day means towels, bags and children, and the car carries all of it.

How long is the drive from London to Bournemouth?
The distance is 106 miles (170 km), about 2 h 15 min without traffic. The route leaves London by the M25 and M3 and continues on the main roads towards the coast. On summer weekends and during school holidays the last stretch into Bournemouth can be slow. National Highways publishes current conditions, and the route is on Google Maps.
Leaving London early on a beach day gives you more time on the sand and a quieter drive.
A day trip from London to Bournemouth
At 2 h 15 min each way, Bournemouth is possible in a day. We estimate 8.5 hours of hire: the two drives plus four hours at the coast. At our rates outside London that is £595 in an E-Class, £723 in an S-Class or a V-Class and £893 in a Range Rover, VAT included. The price is for the car however many of you are in it, and the driver waits while you are out. See the full table on our prices page.
A one-way transfer or an overnight stay is quoted on request.
What to do in Bournemouth
The main draw is the long sandy beach, backed by cliffs, gardens and the pier. The Lower Gardens run inland from the seafront, and the cliff lifts and zigzag paths link the beach with the town. Nearby, Sandbanks and Poole Harbour have their own beaches and boat trips, and Hengistbury Head offers a coastal walk. Check opening times for attractions on their own sites, and see Visit Dorset for what is on.
Make it more than a beach day
The car lets you combine places no train would connect. On the way down or back you could add the New Forest, a visit to Salisbury or a stop in Winchester. Tell us what you would like and we will say what fits in a single day. Our guide to the best day trips from London by car has more ideas.
Who books a Bournemouth private driver
- Families heading to the beach with children, pushchairs and a boot full of bags.
- Groups of up to eight in a V-Class for a birthday, a hen or stag weekend or a reunion; larger parties can ask about a minibus on our coach hire page.
- Conference and business guests travelling to hotels near the seafront.
- Older passengers who find a train change and a long walk with bags hard.
Planning the beach day
The main variable is the weather and the season. On a hot summer weekend the roads south are busy from mid-morning, and the beach car parks fill early, which is another reason a chauffeur helps: we set you down by the seafront and collect you from the same spot. On a cooler day the town, the gardens and the cliff-top walks are quieter, and you can spend more of the time on the coast path.
Tell us where you are staying or which beach you prefer. Bournemouth, Boscombe, Sandbanks and Poole each have their own character, and the drive between them is short. If you want a long lunch or a boat trip, we agree a pick-up time that leaves room for it.
Staying overnight
A single day is possible, but many groups do better with a night by the sea. In that case the quote covers the outward journey and a return the next day. If you would like to explore Dorset for a few days with the car and driver staying with you, say so, and we price the hours as part of the booking.
Which car for Bournemouth?
The E-Class or BMW 5 Series takes up to three passengers, and the S-Class or BMW 7 Series also takes three with more rear space. The V-Class or VW Transporter carries up to eight, and a Range Rover up to four. A Mercedes Sprinter minibus carries up to 16 and is quoted on request.
Cheaper train tickets, and what a car adds
If you are travelling alone and the date is flexible, a cheap advance ticket will beat any car on price, and we would rather you knew that. Railcards and split tickets can bring fares down further; the Railcards site lists what applies to you.
What a car adds is a different kind of day. Nobody has to find platforms, count heads on a crowded carriage or rush for the last train home. Wet towels and sandy shoes stay in the boot, and the return leaves when you are ready.
