How we rank minibus hire with driver London companies
This list covers minibus hire with driver London groups can book. Each entry is ranked the same way: the Google Maps rating weighted by the number of reviews, with at least 15 reviews required. The data comes from Google Maps and is refreshed periodically. Positions are not for sale.
We are Private Driver London. We publish this list and we are a chauffeur company ourselves, with a Sprinter minibus in our fleet, so we sit in a separate labelled box and are not part of the ranking. The other lists are in our London operator directory.
Seat counts and the right size
Minibuses are sold by seat count, and the number on the listing is not always the number of passengers who fit comfortably with luggage. Count your people, then your bags, and leave some margin.
As a guide to our own range, a Mercedes V-Class or VW Transporter takes up to eight passengers, and a Mercedes Sprinter minibus up to 16. Anything above 16 is a coach, and you can read about that on our minibus and coach hire page.
Ask each company for the exact seat count of the vehicle they will send, not the maximum of their fleet. Also ask how many of those seats remain usable once luggage, a pushchair or a wheelchair is on board, because a full 16-seater has little room left for bags.
If your group sits between two sizes, the smaller vehicle is rarely the better choice. A few spare seats make the journey easier, and a second vehicle is worth pricing if the party is large or splits between two pick-up points.
Licensing for larger vehicles
Licensing changes once a vehicle carries more than eight passengers. In general:
- The company needs the correct operator licence for the vehicle it uses. For larger passenger vehicles used for hire or reward that is a public service vehicle (PSV) operator licence from the traffic commissioner. The official guidance is on gov.uk.
- Smaller private hire vehicles in London come under Transport for London, and you can look up a private hire operator on the official TfL checker.
- The driver needs the right licence entitlement for the vehicle, which is another reason to hire a driver rather than a self-drive minibus.
Ask any company to say which licence covers the vehicle you will be in, and to confirm it before you pay a deposit.
Fixed price, hours and what is included
Minibus quotes vary more than car quotes, so insist on a total that states what it covers. The points that move the price are:
- Hours and minimum hire. Hourly hire usually has a minimum. Ours is 4 hours, with VAT included.
- Waiting time. A group at a wedding, match or airport can wait longer than planned. Ask how waiting is charged.
- Distance. Journeys beyond the M25, or to other cities, are often priced differently.
- Parking, tolls and charges. Confirm whether they are inside the price.
- Out-of-hours and extra stops. Late finishes and added pick-ups are the usual extras.
Our minibus and long-distance trips are quoted on request, so that the figure reflects your route and hours. Use the quote form to ask.
Insurance and the vehicle itself
Ask for confirmation that the vehicle is insured for hire and reward and covers all passengers. Ask how old the vehicle is, whether it is air conditioned if that matters, and whether there is room for luggage at the back as well as passengers in the seats.
For a group event, ask what happens if the vehicle breaks down: whether a replacement is arranged, and how quickly.
Questions to ask before you book
- Which licence covers this vehicle and this driver, and can you confirm it?
- What is the exact seat count, and how much luggage fits?
- Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT, waiting time and parking?
- What is the minimum hire and the cancellation policy?
- What happens if the vehicle is unavailable on the day?
Hiring for a smaller party? Our chauffeur companies list covers cars and people carriers, and our page on wedding car hire covers bridal parties and guest transport.
